Primary school gets face lift by Military taskforce to boost peaceful coexistence in Nigeria

NIGERIA

The Special Military Task force in northcentral Nigeria of Plateau state has renovated five class rooms to foster peaceful and conducive learning environment for children.

Commander of the taskforce, also known as Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Major General Augustine Agundu, said children must go to school and learn in a conducive atmosphere, adding that if peace continue to prevail, his command will renovate more schools, saying there is that aspect of civil-military relations in the agenda and the aspect of reaching out to the community to explain why they do what they do by encouraging people to eschew violence.

Agundu, said that what motivated him to him to refurbish the Zololo LEA Primary School Naraguta, is because he believed that children should not grow in a hostile environment saying that a better friendly space will help to respond to security concerns.

“So, we are reaching out to every nook and cranny of the state to ensure that they understand what Operation Safe Haven stands for, understanding the mandate given us to Operate by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Abayomi Olonishaki. It is a way of reaching out to the community for us to have a common understanding, a common platform, that together we can actually pursue peace on the Plateau.

“I also want to appreciate that Naraguta community comprises mixed tribes but are living harmoniously together.”

Responding, the village head of Naraguta Community, Ahmed Bello Abubakar, described the refurbishing of a block of five classrooms as a practical testimony of military-civil relationship and peace building enhancement in an abandoned community like theirs.

He explained that the commissioning ceremony came up as a result of official visit paid to the community by the Military taskforce boss as part of his familiarization tour on Saturday, 3rd November, 2018, where he saw for himself the dilapidated condition of the primary school where he noticed the absence of social amenities in the area of education and other critical areas like roads, pipe borne water, hospital and others.

According to Abubakar, the medical outreach also taking place was also the personal initiative of the Commander which came as a result of his passion and care for humanity and because of his wide experience, commitment and selfless service to the nation and beyond.
