Dedryck Boyata signs for Hertha Berlin after leaving Celtic

BERLIN

Dedryck Boyata has signed for Hertha Berlin on a long-term deal after leaving Celtic at the end of the season.

Boyata had run out his contract with the Scottish Premiership champions whilst recovering from an injury.

The Belgian centre-back has not been in action since March and leaves the club despite manager Neil Lennon’s hope that a new deal could be agreed.

Hertha Berlin’s general manager Michael Preetz says the Bundesliga side have been tracking the 28-year-old for some time now.

“We have been tracking Dedryck for a while and are fully convinced of his quality. We are sure that he will strengthen our defence,” said Preetz.

“I am pleased that the deal has worked out,” said Boyata.

Boyata has made 16 appearances for the Belgium national side

“It is an ambitious club and we have similar goals. Also, I was very impressed with Michael Preetz’ efforts to bring me here.

“I am looking forward to the new season and want to achieve something with the club.”

Celtic rejected a firm offer for Boyata Fulham last summer
