Police in Nigeria say it has arrested a 24-year-old woman who was caught on camera locking a young boy in a cage harbouring fierce dogs.
The Lagos State Police public relations officer, Bala Elkana, in southwest Nigeria, made this known in a statement released on Thursday.
Contrary to reports that the incident took place in Nsukka, a town in Enugu State southeastern Nigeria, the crime occurred in Aguda area of Lagos.
Dolapo Badmus, who is the PPRO for Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos, said the boy who is an orphan has been taken to a secured shelter.
“The Gender Unit traced the suspect to Chumpe Liquor Store, Surulere Lagos and her residence at Aguda,” the statement said.
“The suspect admitted that she is the one on the viral video flogging the child with a belt, but she denied locking the survivor in a cage with dogs. That she only locked him in an empty dog kennel where bags are kept.
“She claimed to have locked up the Boy for a few hours before bringing him out. She alleged that the boy took a hot drink in their refrigerator and was misbehaving.
“That he smashed the side mirror of her Toyota Camry with stone which made her detain him in the dog kennel. Investigation revealed that the survivor lost his parents and was brought to Lagos in 2012 from Anambra State southeastern Nigeria.
Police had earlier took to Instagram to say, “Last week we got a report of a lady that beat a young lad and threw him into dungeon of dogs! As I got the information through @funkejenifaakindele and @do2dtun was helpful, the domestic violence response police team of Lagos State command was activated! The team went into action and the lady was consequently arrested,. The video is that of the cage where the lady threw the boy after that merciless beating! The suspect is in custody and will be charged to court….The boy who happens to be an orphan has been rescued and kept in a shelter provided by Lagos state government! I appreciate everyone that cooperated with the police in getting to the root of the matter”!
