Nigeria’s Gov. Lalong sends list of commissioners to Plateau Assembly after 180 days

NIGERIA

Nigeria’s Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, in north central region of the country, has forwarded a 23 man list of commissioner-nominees to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation.

In an executive communication read by Speaker Abok Ayuba during Tuesday’s plenary, the letter requested the legislative arm to screen the would-be members of the State Executive in line with its constitutional mandate.

Of the 23 man list, over 75% of the commissioner-nominees are returning members of the State Executive having served in the first stint of the Lalong administration.

The list is coming after 180 days since inauguration on May 29, 2019, with the public criticizing the government for not appointing cabinet for over three months.

Lalong had earlier said he is taking his time to appointment the best of cabinet that will take his second term in office to the next level, but the list read by the Speaker of the Plateau Assembly on Tuesday shown that over 75 per cent of the 23 man list are former commissioner who served in the Lalong’s past administration.

Political pundits had wondered why the Governor will take this long only to return over 75 per cent of his previous cabinet who he claimed performed below expectation in his first tenure.
