Nigeria’s opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in north central Plateau State, has said it will mobilise its legal team against Governor Simon Lalong and the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), against its decision to swear-in aspirants of the local government APC flag bearers as Caretaker Committee Chairmen in 4 LGAs in the State.
It would be recalled that the State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), on the 10th of October 2018, conducted sham elections in 13 Local Government Areas and excluded 4 LGAs of Barkin Ladi, Jos North, Jos South and Riyom, citing Insecurity.
However after one year, Lalong on 9th October 2019 sworn-in the aspirants who contested under his party to take over as Chairmen in the affected 4 LGAs.
Reacting to the development, the PDP described Lalong’s decision as impunity demanding that the Governor should retract its steps and conduct elections in the said LGAs.
“We are making consultations with our team of lawyers and will soon mobilise them against the illegal and undemocratic moves of Governor Lalong”, the PDP said.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday the leadership of the party through its publicity secretary, John Akans, said the governor’s decision is illegal, undemocratic, unconstitutional and a full blown of dictatorship.
According to him, “Governor Lalong’s decision to swear-in APC’s flag-bearers as caretaker chairmen in 4 LGAs, is unexpected of him as a lawyer who claimed to be a democrat.
“His action is gearing towards disenfranchising the people by denying them the right to freedom and liberty to choose their representatives: if this act is not condemned and rejected by all men of goodwill, it might be a security threat to our existence as a people, because it is now clear that the APC has substituted democracy with impunity and are forcefully asking the people to accept this undemocratic and illegal action” Akans said.
The PDP also emphasised that Lalong is brewing insecurity in the State and should be held responsible for any breach of peace as the pulse of the Plateau people felt are unhappy by this singular act, the PDP said.
