A power company in Nigeria, the Jos Electricity Distribution Company, (JED) Plc, is poised to meter over 500,000 customers aimed at halting estimated billing.

The move was necessitated by constant appeal of customers to put a stop to estimated billing, says the Chief Executive Officer JED PLC, Engr. Uday Shankar Mishra.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony of the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) Scheme, held at the Kangang community of Rantya area in Jos, Plateau State, north central Nigeria, Engr. Mishra, said the effort is in collaboration with two other companies known as MOJEC INTERNATIONAL and TRIPPLE SEVENTH NIG LTD.

“The Joint partnership with MAPs became necessary due to the interminable demand from customers that we discontinue billing customers through estimation.

“Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission thought it wise to bring the Distribution Licensees and MAPs to a joint partnership that would bridge the metering gap and eliminate estimated billing.

“JED has joined a few other Distribution Companies in commencing this scheme and because of improvement in the quality of our service, we are now one of the best DisCos in Nigeria in terms of handling customer complaints.

“It is therefore factual, that development is consistent with JED PLC, especially if you have a flashback to the industry before we came on board. It is evident that the young and vibrant workforce that is pioneering far reaching innovations on how we can better our service is the dream team that can make the dream work of delivering electricity to you in a safe, reliable and cost effective manner”, Mishra said.

Balogun said MOJEC has been in business for over 20 years producing meters locally, adding that partnering with JED will increase service delivery as MOJEC will be on ground to monitor and maintain the prepaid meters installed to customers.
