Police in Nigeria’s northeastern Bauchi State on Thursday placed restriction of movement during Saturday’s re-run elections in two local governments of Gamawa and Zaki.

Spokesman for the Bauchi State command, DSP Kamal Datti said in a press release that the decision came after due consultation with relevant stakeholders superintending over the election.

“There will be total restriction of movement of persons and vehicles on the election day between 8:00am – 4:00pm in the affected areas where election will take place, except personnel on essential duties who must carry their valid identification card,” Datti said.

He added that only eligible registered voters with valid Permanent Voters Card (PVC) will be allowed to vote warning voters to keep distance of at least 300 meters away from the polling unit in accordance with the Electoral Act after casting their votes.

While assuring the general public of adequate security and level playing ground for all political parties, the Police spokesman said the Police with other security agencies will also be patrolling the State to ensure strict compliance.

“We call on parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders, opinion leaders, guardians to prevail on their children, subjects, adherents and wards not allow themselves to be used to cause disturbance of public peace before, during or after the election as anybody arrested in the act will face the full wrath of the law,” the statement said.

Sky News Africa reports that the Court had on November 14, 2019, sacked the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker, Hon. Umar Tata, representing Zaki Federal Constituency. Court had also nullified the election of one Garba Gololo of All Progressives Congress representing Gamawa Federal Constituency of Bauchi State, ordering the country’s electoral body to conduct a re-run election in the area within 90 days.
