Electricity coy JED, in Nigeria says consumers ‘ll pay more decry subsidy

NIGERIA

An energy company in Nigeria, known as the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED), has said consumers of electricity will pay more starting from 1st July 2020.

The company gave reason for the increase in hike, saying that energy distribution comes without subsidy.

However, the new tariff regime would not come as a surprise, as customers were briefed arising from a stakeholders meeting earlier held with consumers, Head, Corporate Communications, Dr Friday Adakole Elijah, has said.

Speaking in a statement sent to Sky News Africa, Dr. Elijah said lack of subsidy has mitigated the efficiency of electricity supply in Nigeria, hence the need for the new tariff policy aimed at serving consumers better.

According to him: “Lack of subsidy in the market had tremendously hampered the sustainability of service improvement in the energy sector, hence the new tariff regime would be predicated on energy service availability and quality of supply.

“Customers shall be required to pay for their consumptions based on hours of supply they enjoyed.

“The tariff which is now cost and service reflective, customers that enjoyed premium services would be expected to pay higher tariff based on the guaranteed hours of availability and service quality”, he said.

The spokesman for the energy company explained that customers will be categorized into groups (Band) A, B, C, D and E with A enjoying 20 hours and above and E enjoying 4hours and above energy.

He urged customers to understand with the company, adding that as soon as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission release the exact new cost for the tariff, it would be unveiled to the public.
