Nigerian domestic flight, Ibom Air, bans ‘unruly passenger’ for life after airport row

On August 10, 2025, what should have been a routine and peaceful journey from Uyo to Lagos turned into a deeply distressing and dangerous ordeal for all aboard an Ibom Air flight.

The calm was shattered by the alarming actions of Ms. Comfort Emmanson, whose refusal to heed basic safety instructions escalated into a violent outburst that threatened the wellbeing of passengers, crew, and the aircraft itself.

A statement by Ibom Air, says, the incident began even before takeoff, with Ms. Emmanson refusing to switch off her mobile phone despite clear and repeated instructions from the cabin crew. Her brazen defiance was a grave breach of safety protocol—one that placed everyone on board at risk. Though the pilot intervened with an announcement urging calm and compliance, only a passenger’s quick action to switch off the device prevented the situation from spiraling further at that time. The tense atmosphere weighed heavily on everyone present, a troubling foreshadowing of what was to come.

After landing in Lagos, the situation took a heart-wrenching turn. Instead of showing remorse or restraint, Ms. Emmanson unleashed a brutal physical attack on the aircraft’s Purser, the very person who had sought to protect them all through enforcing crucial safety measures. The Purser was subjected to unimaginable violence—stepped on, her wig torn, her glasses removed and destroyed, and repeatedly slapped. The assault was not limited to one person; other crew members who courageously attempted to intervene became targets of her rage as well.

The depth of Ms. Emmanson’s aggression was staggering. In a moment that could have risked catastrophic consequences, she tried to seize a fire extinguisher, a weapon that, if used or damaged, could have imperiled the safety of the entire aircraft and everyone on board. The crew’s bravery and quick thinking prevented a tragedy, but the emotional and physical toll was immense.

Airport security and Ibom Air’s security team arrived promptly, but Ms. Emmanson’s rage did not subside. She fought fiercely against all efforts to restrain her, continuing her assaults even after being removed from the plane. She struck out at security personnel who had only come to protect the lives and safety of all involved—a senseless display of violence that shook everyone witnessing the ordeal.

Finally subdued and taken into custody by the Nigeria Police Force, Ms. Emmanson now faces the legal consequences of her reckless and violent actions. Ibom Air has shown zero tolerance for such behavior, immediately banning her from ever flying with the airline again. The airline also formally reported the incident to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, underscoring the seriousness with which it regards the safety and dignity of passengers and crew.

In the face of such a harrowing incident, the courage and professionalism of the Ibom Air crew stand as beacons of hope and resilience. Their calm resolve and dedication ensured that the situation did not escalate into an even greater disaster. The support and swift intervention by airport security and law enforcement were equally vital, reflecting the collective commitment to protecting every traveler’s safety.

This deeply unsettling event is a sobering reminder of the preciousness of human dignity and the vital importance of respecting safety rules designed to protect all lives. Ibom Air’s unyielding stance against unruly and violent conduct emphasizes a universal truth—there can be no compromise where safety and respect are concerned. As we reflect on this incident, let it strengthen our resolve to foster kindness, patience, and responsibility in every journey we undertake.
