Insecurity: Police set up new deivision in Nigeria’s Benue north

Nigeria
Nigeria’s Benue State is poised for improved security following the approval by the country’s Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to create two new Area Commands and upgrade five Police Stations to Divisions.
According to a press release from the Benue State Police Command, this structural adjustment addresses persistent challenges encountered in policing some of the state’s most troubled Local Government Areas.
The release explains that ongoing security appraisals revealed geographical gaps between the police and communities in key areas, prompting the need for this realignment. The new Area Commands—Daudu and Naka—are expected to bring policing closer to the people and enhance operational efficiency across difficult terrains.
The upgraded Divisions include Ayilamo, Yelwata, Jato-Aka, Okpokolo, and Agan, each planned to increase the capacity for quicker response and more authoritative policing. Daudu Area Command will oversee Guma, Daudu, Yelwata, and Agan Divisions, while Naka Area Command will manage Naka, Apa, Agatu, and Okpokolo Divisions.
These changes, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, are set to improve conflict resolution efforts, particularly between farmers and herders, a longstanding source of tension in the state. The upgraded Divisions will also help the police respond swiftly to distress calls and security threats.
Commissioner of Police, CP Emenari Ifeanyi, PhD, psc, mnips, expressed deep appreciation to the IGP for his ongoing support and foresight. He described the move as vital for delivering lasting solutions to the security challenges faced in Benue. CP Ifeanyi also acknowledged the cooperation from the state government, thanking Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormen Alia for his support of the police command’s efforts to safeguard lives and property.
DSP Udeme Edet, who signed the official press release, emphasized that the police command is optimistic that the realignment will strengthen the bond between law enforcement and the communities they serve, enhancing public safety and trust.
For residents, especially in previously underserved areas, the announcement brings a renewed sense of hope that the police will now be more accessible and responsive. The community looks forward to a safer environment supported by stronger law enforcement presence.
As the new Area Commands and Divisions take effect, officials and locals alike watch eagerly, anticipating that these strategic changes will usher in a new chapter of peace and stability across Benue State.
