Nigerian Postal Service Announces $80 Customs Duty on All Parcels Sent to the U.S.

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has revealed that Nigerians sending parcels to the United States will now be required to pay a prepaid customs duty of $80 (approximately N123,000), effective from August 29, 2025.

This new fee applies to all parcels, excluding letters and documents.

The change follows a U.S. Executive Order suspending the de minimis exemption that previously allowed goods worth up to $800 to enter duty-free. Under this directive, all postal operators worldwide must collect the flat $80 duty before shipment dispatch.

NIPOST clarified that this policy is global and not unique to Nigeria. The agency warned that stricter customs checks and carrier procedures may cause delivery delays and disruption in global logistics. It is actively collaborating with international partners to minimize impact and ensure continued reliable service.

Logistics experts caution that this new duty could increase costs for Nigerians, especially small businesses and e-commerce sellers shipping to the U.S., potentially affecting cross-border trade and deliveries.
