Electrification Agency to convene roundtable with Nigeria’s South-south A’ Ibom’s Gov’t

Nigeria
In a bid to accelerate the growth of Nigeria’s clean energy sector, a Rural Electrification Agency (REA), under the Nigeria’s government Federal Ministry of Power, is set to convene a strategic Roundtable in partnership with the country’s south-south Akwa Ibom State Government.
The event will take place on September 10, 2025, in Abuja, with His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, in attendance.
The collaborative Roundtable forms part of the REA’s ongoing initiative to engage sub-national governments and foster public-private partnerships aimed at expanding electricity access through innovative and sustainable measures. This move aligns with the transformative 2023 Electricity Act, recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which provides a legal framework for reforms in Nigeria’s electricity market.
Akwa Ibom State has demonstrated a strong commitment to these reforms by approving the establishment of a structured electricity market through the State Executive Council. Central to this development is the formation of the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Commission, responsible for licensing, regulation, and resolving conflicts within the electricity sector. In addition, the newly created Akwa Ibom Rural Electrification Agency will manage the state’s electricity market, focusing on integrating a diverse energy mix including renewables, gas, and hydro power.
Under the leadership of REA Managing Director/CEO Abba Abubakar Aliyu, the Roundtable aims to bolster collaboration between state governments, Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESCOs), and other stakeholders to foster innovation, improve ease of doing business, and implement people-centric solutions.
Discussions during the roundtable will cover business models, investment prospects, and data-driven strategies designed to expand energy access across Akwa Ibom State. This initiative reflects a forward-thinking approach to building a sustainable, inclusive, and impactful electricity market that supports the state’s economic growth and addresses its energy challenges through public-private partnerships and advanced regulatory frameworks.
