‘Those I left in PDP are still my brothers’ – Gov Mutfwang
Nigeria
The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang has said those he left in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), are still his brothers, noting that his decision to defect from the party was born out of necessity to secure political stability.
The Governor said the sacrifices made by the PDP to bring him to power in 2023 cannot be forgotten or taken for granted due to his decision to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I acknowledge the support of the PDP leaders, members, and supporters at all levels during my time in the party, and I remain grateful for the trust reposed in me”, he said.
Mutfwang stated this recently in Jos, during a brief ceremony organised to usher him into his new party, the APC.
“I did not leave the PDP because of personal gains, but to align the State with the centre in Abuja to attract more development for the People of Plateau.
“My decision became necessary due to the sharp divide amongst our people which if not addressed, will continue to deprive the State from attracting adequate capital development, hence my defection.
“Given the realities of the moment and guided by my commitment to purposeful leadership, clarity of direction, and service delivery, I am compelled to seek an alternative political platform.”
Mutfwang reiterated his resolve to continue to work with all stakeholders irrespective of political affiliation, noting that the State is bigger than any individual’s personal ambition.
“PDP is still a family. Political parties will not divide us. The goal is Plateau. We are first of all Plateau indigenes and the Plateau project must be placed above personal ambitions”, he said.
Recall that Mutfwang received his APC membership card on Friday during a stakeholders’, an event that publicly confirmed his defection and signaled a significant realignment in the state’s political landscape.
His defection came about three weeks after Nentawe Yilwatda, the national chairman of the APC first announced that the governor had joined the ruling party.
With the defection of Governor Mutfwang, the entire North-central region is now governed by the APC, our correspondent reports.
