Agency NiMet, Partner nutrition coy on Climate-Smart Solutions for health, agriculture in Nigeria

Nigeria
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Centre for Well-being and Integrated Nutrition Solutions (C-WINS) have formalized a strategic partnership aimed at advancing climate action through integrated approaches linking climate data with public health, food security, soil health, and community resilience.
Central to the collaboration is the development of early-warning systems tailored specifically to local farmers. These systems will enable proactive responses to adverse weather conditions, reducing climate-related risks to crops and health. Together, NiMet and C-WINS will launch community workshops on climate-smart agriculture, teaching farmers adaptive techniques based on real-time meteorological information. These initiatives target increased crop yields alongside a reduction in climate-related health incidents by providing timely alerts to farmers and health workers.
In his opening remarks, NiMet’s Director-General and CEO, Prof. Charles Anosike, highlighted the critical role of climate intelligence in mitigating health risks, strengthening food and nutrition security, improving soil conditions, and enhancing disaster resilience. NiMet’s key role will be supplying accurate meteorological data and custom climate forecasts essential to these interventions’ success.
Dr. Mahmud Mustafa, Head of Missions at C-WINS, commended NiMet on its recent achievements and affirmed C-WINS’s commitment to leveraging NiMet’s forecasts to design training programs for health workers and to lead community engagement efforts. Their joint work will ensure the accessibility and practicality of climate information for rural communities, supporting farmers with locally informed adaptive practices.
This partnership fosters a more informed and resilient population, equipped to confront the challenges of climate change by increasing agricultural productivity and reducing health vulnerabilities related to climate variability.
