Assembly Speaker resigns, new Speaker takesover in Nigeria’s Benue north

In Nigeria’s Benue north on Sunday, political drama ensued as the Speaker of the 10th House of Assembly, Hon. Hyacinth Dajoh, officially resigned from his position, delivering a sudden shock to the state’s political landscape.

Just immediately after his resignation, another Speaker, Hon. Berger Alfred Emberga emerged as the new Speaker of the Assembly.

However, in a handwritten letter addressed to the Clerk of the House, Mr. Dajoh stated his resignation was tendered “in good faith and in the best interest of the state.” This comes shortly after a failed impeachment attempt against him last week, which led to the suspension of four lawmakers believed to be behind the move.

Mr. Dajoh expressed gratitude toward his colleagues for the opportunity to serve as the Assembly Speaker, describing himself as “the first among equals.” Despite stepping down as speaker, he pledged to continue serving as the legislator representing Gboko West State Constituency, emphasizing his commitment to peace and stability.

The resignation letter, which Mr. Dajoh shared on his social media page, ended with a call for unity: “Let there be peace.”

The Benue Assembly is currently in session to elect a new Speaker as the state watchers closely monitor the unfolding political developments.
