Nigeria’s Benue north has recently undergone a significant political and developmental transformation, marked notably by the resignation of former Assembly Speaker Aondona Dajoh and the emergence of Alfred Berger as the new Speaker.
Berger’s election signals more than a mere change of guard—it represents a legislature now more cohesively aligned with Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s progressive vision. This unity is critical as the state pushes forward an ambitious development agenda aimed at healing, rebuilding, and positioning Benue for sustained prosperity.
Governor Alia’s deep understanding of the burdens weighing on Benue is the bedrock of his administration’s effectiveness. He knows all too well the economic hardships, infrastructural deficits, social unrest, and environmental as well as security challenges that have long besieged the state. Yet, where many have seen despair, Alia has seen opportunity. His administration, since assuming office, has refused to offer hollow promises; instead, it has delivered concrete results that impact daily life.
The passage of 2025 budget in Benue saw the release and effective deployment of over ₦149.5 billion toward critical infrastructure projects. Roads that once languished in neglect are being reconstructed and expanded. Flyovers and underpasses that ease congestion and improve safety are underway, reshaping Makurdi and connecting other commercial hubs like Gboko, Otukpo, and Katsina-Ala. Government buildings and civic spaces are getting facelifted, signaling a respect for governance and civic pride. These projects do more than beautify—they stimulate commerce, create jobs, and revive hope.
Education is at the heart of Alia’s transformation playbook. The abolition of WAEC and NECO exam fees for all public secondary school students has removed financial barriers for thousands of youths. Further, Benue State University’s testing center received upgraded computer equipment, modernizing assessments, while scholarships have been granted to over 40 first-class graduates, enabling them to pursue higher degrees and professional certifications. Long-term investments in education include the establishment of the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology at Ihugh and a fresh university campus at Adikpo, laying foundations for knowledge economies.
Healthcare is also being revitalized. The commissioning of the Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital has bolstered efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates, historically high in the region. The Benue State University Teaching Hospital has experienced modernization, improving access to quality care. These are not mere constructions; they are lifelines that restore dignity and provide critical care to vulnerable communities.
Digital transformation under Governor Alia’s leadership has also placed Benue on the national map. Recognized among Nigeria’s “50 Most Valuable Personalities in the Digital Economy 2025,” the governor’s initiatives—especially through the Benue State Digital Infrastructure Company (BDIC)—have led to expanded e-governance, the establishment of e-commerce hubs, broadband rollout, and extensive digital skills training. Thousands of youths and civil servants are digitally empowered, readying the state for a modern economy driven by innovation and connectivity.
What makes Governor Alia’s leadership exceptional is the personal touch he adds to governance. Known for his hands-on supervision, often visiting project sites late into the night, he embodies a leader who not only plans but actively participates in implementation. His pastoral background lends him empathy and sensitivity, qualities that deepen his commitment to healing a state whose wounds run deep. This blend of visionary governance and heartfelt care underpins his popularity and effectiveness.
The political stability reinforced by the new assembly leadership under Speaker Alfred Berger complements the governor’s efforts. Berger’s election followed a contentious period that saw the resignation of former Speaker Aondona Dajoh. What followed was an emergency plenary that showcased the resolve of lawmakers to overcome sensationalism and unite for Benue’s future. Berger, uniting the House with promises of inclusivity and cooperation, stands as a crucial ally to Governor Alia, facilitating the swift legislative support required for the state’s ambitious projects and reforms.
Together, Governor Alia and the Benue State House of Assembly under Berger are crafting a narrative of renewal. This collaboration ensures that laws match the needs of a state hungry for peace, opportunity, and dignity.
Benue, once caught in cycles of hardship and discord, now stands poised on a path of resurgence. Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, the man many already call the Son of Consolation, is not just a political figure but a healer of his people. His governance signals a new dawn where rest, growth, and dignity are within reach for every Benuean.
He may not yet wear crowns or chieftaincy titles, but in the hearts of his people, he is already crowned with the highest honor. The voice of Benue speaks clearly: this is a leader who sees, hears, and acts for the people’s good.
Indeed, the ancient wisdom still rings true for Benue today: “The Voice of the People is the Voice of God.”
God keep Alia. God bless Benue.
