FEMALE WORLD CUP
Sky News Africa picks five players who could be key for Banyana when they take on Spain in their opening match of the Fifa Women’s World Cup on Saturday
1. Janine van Wyk
The veteran defender is in the twilight of her career, and she has one more chance to impress on the world stage and use her experience to help Banyana get into the knockout stages.
2. Themba Kgatlana
Kgatlana is Africa’s best women’s footballer after scooping the accolade at the Caf awards earlier this year. All eyes will be on her to continue with her magnificent form for Banyana.
3. Linda Motlhalo
The 20-year-old midfielder has been playing abroad for quite some time now, and she will be key in Banyana’s attempts to impress in France.
4. Leandra Smeda
The Banyana Banyana winger has gained experience whilst playing in the Uefa Champions League, and being exposed to that level of competitive football could be crucial in helping the team do well.
5. Refiloe Jane
Another Banyana player growing her trade overseas, and surely Jane, who captained the team against Norway, will look to contribute more in terms of scoring goals.
