Military seizes Ak-47, deadly weapons from herdsmen in Nigeria’s Benue north

Nigerian troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) – a joint security task force, have struck a blow against suspected armed herdsmen terrorizing farming communities in Benue State by recovering an AK-47 rifle and ammunition during a clearance patrol in Tse Adudu yesterday.

Sky News Africa obtained that, the operation targeted criminal elements accused of illegal cattle grazing and crop destruction, restoring hope for affected farmers.

The mission was launched after residents of Akpiti village in the Gbanga/Tongo council ward supplied credible intelligence reports about the violent activities linked to illegal herdsmen. 

Acting promptly, OPWS troops mobilized swiftly on motorcycles, advancing deep into the farm settlement to confront the threat head-on.

Eyewitness reports that, “as the soldiers approached, the suspected armed herdsmen fled into the surrounding bush, abandoning their cattle in the process. This retreat left behind a clue for the troops, who immediately conducted a thorough search of the area to uncover hidden dangers.

Their efforts paid off when they discovered a concealed cache inside a makeshift hut. The recovered items included an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and five rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, all carefully packaged and hidden—evidence of the extent of weaponization among the fleeing suspects.

Major General Moses Gara, Force Commander of OPWS, lauded the troops for their professionalism and determination during the operation. He also commended the local residents for their courage and cooperation in providing timely and accurate intelligence, emphasizing that such partnership is essential for lasting peace in the region.

General Gara reiterated the Joint Task Force’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace, ensuring food security, and fostering socio-economic stability not only in Benue but across all areas under their jurisdiction. He urged the public to remain vigilant and continue assisting security agencies by sharing actionable information.

This successful operation highlights the critical role of community collaboration in tackling security challenges, sending a clear message to criminal herdsmen: their days of terrorizing hardworking farmers are numbered.
