Nigeria’s gov’t (SGF) lauds former permanent secretaries

The Federal Government has expressed deep appreciation for the Council of Former Permanent Secretaries (CORFEPS) for their contributions toward strengthening governance and improving efficiency within Nigeria’s public sector. 

This commendation was made by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, CON, during a courtesy visit by a CORFEPS delegation to the Government House in Abuja.

Led by the Council’s National Chairman and former SGF, Dr. Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, CFR, the delegation presented a series of advisory documents that have been submitted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. These documents contain strategic recommendations on vital sectors of the economy, reflecting CORFEPS’ invaluable role as an advisory body to the nation’s leadership.

In a statement signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, the SGF praised the Council for its continued dedication and the wealth of experience its members bring to national development. He emphasized that President Tinubu, known as a listening leader, highly values their inputs and assured that their suggestions and recommendations will be seriously considered in policy formulation and implementation.

The SGF also highlighted the administration’s commitment to leveraging the expertise of retired civil service veterans to enhance governance. According to him, tapping into this reservoir of institutional knowledge will be crucial for the success of ongoing reforms and nation-building efforts.

Dr. Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, speaking on behalf of CORFEPS, reaffirmed the Council’s readiness to support the Federal Government through proactive advisory services aimed at effective public service delivery. He noted that CORFEPS is keen to continue playing a pivotal role in shaping policies that foster transparency, efficiency, and sustainable development.

In line with its advisory mandate, the Council has submitted three key documents to President Tinubu since early 2024. These include Strengthening the Renewed Hope AgendaEnhancing Government Food Security Agenda, and Deportation of Foreigners from the USA: Implications to Nigeria. Additionally, CORFEPS forwarded an advisory paper on the Tax Reform Agenda to the National Assembly for consideration.

The meeting underscored the Federal Government’s recognition of the strategic importance of CORFEPS as a resource within the public sector, reflecting a renewed focus on collaborative governance. Both parties expressed hope that the partnership would deepen in the coming years to further strengthen Nigeria’s institutions and drive national growth.
