Nigeria’s President Tinubu to visit Japan, Brazil

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja Thursday, August 14, 2025, embarking on a diplomatic and economic tour to Japan and Brazil.

This mission highlights Nigeria’s intent to deepen global partnerships and attract foreign investment critical to the nation’s development agenda.

In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, details were provided that President Tinubu’s journey includes a stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before arriving in Yokohama, Japan. There, he is set to attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) from August 20 to 22. This year’s conference, themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” will focus on Africa’s economic transformation, advancing private-sector investment, fostering innovation, and promoting sustainable development, peace, and stability across the continent.

During TICAD9, President Tinubu will participate in key plenary sessions and engage in bilateral meetings. He will also meet with executives of Japanese firms already invested in Nigeria, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing economic ties and encouraging further investment.

Following his participation in TICAD, President Tinubu will travel to Brasilia, Brazil, for a two-day state visit from August 24 to 25, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. This visit aims to strengthen Nigeria-Brazil bilateral relations, explore new areas of cooperation, and formalize agreements and memoranda of understanding across diverse sectors.

The Nigerian delegation, which includes senior ministers and officials, will also convene with Brazilian business leaders at a dedicated forum to discuss strategic investments and partnerships supporting Nigeria’s growth objectives.

Onanuga remarked, “President Tinubu’s engagements in Japan and Brazil come at a timely and strategic moment, positioning Nigeria prominently within global development dialogues and economic forums. These visits reinforce the administration’s commitment to fostering innovation-driven partnerships that will contribute to sustainable prosperity for both Nigeria and the African continent.”

TICAD, initiated by the Japanese government in 1993 and co-hosted by multilateral partners including the United Nations and World Bank, is a vital platform for high-level policy discourse between African leaders and global development partners. The previous conference was held in Tunisia in 2022.

This diplomatic tour signifies a critical opportunity for Nigeria to leverage international cooperation in advancing its economic goals and consolidating its role on the world stage.
