Delta State in Nigeria’s south-south region is stepping firmly into a green future as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori announced plans to scale up investments in renewable energy across the region. 

At a high-profile Rural Electrification Agency (REA) roundtable in Abuja on Wednesday, the governor revealed a comprehensive strategy aimed at transforming power supply and energizing local communities.

Oborevwori described renewable energy — including solar, wind, hydro, and biomass — as the “cornerstone for unlocking productivity, attracting investments, and enhancing livelihoods” for Delta’s residents. He emphasized that these clean energy sources are no longer niche alternatives but essential drivers for inclusive growth and rural transformation.

The state government is rolling out a decentralized energy approach to power critical government infrastructures such as the governor’s office, the new state secretariat, Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba Airport, and universities. Integrated renewable systems are at the heart of this move to reduce fossil fuel dependence while cutting costs.

“As fossil fuels become more expensive and environmentally unsustainable, Delta sees renewable energy as the future,” Oborevwori said. “We aim to create a win-win scenario where investors profit while the state powers up sustainably.”

Beyond government facilities, the administration is actively working to expand power access to villages, schools, hospitals, and small businesses, targeting off-grid and mini-grid solutions to meet rapidly growing demand. This inclusive approach intends to boost local industries and generate jobs.

REA Managing Director Abba Aliyu praised Delta’s progressive stance, noting the agency’s commitment to helping states develop decentralized renewable energy projects. He stressed the importance of collaboration between state governments and private investors to unlock the sector’s full potential.

The event culminated with a groundbreaking memorandum of understanding between Delta State and the REA committing both parties to accelerate renewable energy rollout. With strong government backing and promising returns, Delta is positioning itself as a beacon for sustainable energy in Nigeria’s industrial landscape.
