Nigeria’s Police boss task officers on free, fair credible election ahead of 2019

Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris has tasked officers of the Police Force on free, fair and credible election as the nation prepares for another general polls come 2019.

The IGP stated this on Friday at the Graduation Ceremony of Tactical Leadership and Command Course held at the Police Staff College in Jos, the capital city of Plateau State.

Represented by the Commandant of the Police Staff College Jos, AIG Dorothy Gimba, the IGP charged the graduating senior officers to ensure transparency in the application of their job especially with the new skill acquired in the Intermediate Command Course (ICC).

He said, “As we inch towards the 2019, General Elections you must brace up and prepare for an all important task of bequeathing to our Nation a free, fair and credible election that will herald sustained peace and National cohesion.

“You must be guided by the provisions of the Electoral Act and remain apolitical in your dealings within the political process.

“Since my assumption of duty as IGP, I have stirred the ship of the Force to operate within the principle of Democratic Policing as an institution that is responsive, representative and accountable to its citizens at all time”, the Police boss said.

However the Commandant of the College, AIG Dorothy Gimba, said the 41 Superintendent of Police (CSPs) who participated in the course were drawn from various Commands and formations across the country and has undergone vigorous task and lectures in the past 3 months.

She stressed that the objectives of the Tactical Leadership and Command Course which is one of the “Intermediate among the three Executive Courses offered by the college is aimed at equipping the officers with knowledge from different field of studies for optimal performance.”

Gimba said the 41 graduands received training in the area of Respect to Rule of Law and Human Rights; Management/Leadership and Human Behavior, Intelligence led Policing, Community Policing/Partnership, Inter- Agency collaboration and Police Professionalism Ethics and Attitudinal change.

Addressing the graduating officers the AIG said, “I reminded you that violent crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, farmers/herders clash, insurgency and terrorism would require intelligence based proactive measures if we must prevent unnecessary bloodletting and secure the country for Nigerians to live in peace.
