Mrs. Leritshimwa Diyal, the stealer of a three-day-old baby in Jos northcentral Nigeria’s Plateau State, has confessed to the crime saying that the desire to have a child that would call her mother pushed her into stealing the baby. 

Diyal a student of the College of Health Technology, Zawan in Plateau, stated this when the Plateau Police Command paraded her before journalists on Thursday. 

The baby belonging to one Mrs. Mary Chukwuebuka of Zaramangada area of Jos was stolen three days after she put to bed at the Plateau Specialist Hospital. 

When the matter was reported to the police command in Jos, it swung into action and commenced investigation which led to the arrest of the culprit.

The culprit who before her arrest claimed she gave birth at a kidnappers Den, also lied that she had her antenatal at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).
 

The 32-year old Diyal, said she has been married for over seven years without a child, hence the desire to have one pushed her into stealing another woman’s child. 

She explained that she and her husband had sought for medical attention to ascertain the reason for their childlessness but to no avail. 

Diyal who said she regrets her action, also said she contacted many orphanages to enable her adopt a child, but none granted her the opportunity, hence she resort to stealing. 

“I just needed a child to call me mother. I have been married for seven years without a child. I went to various orphanages and applied for a baby but there was no hope. I wasn’t thinking straight when I stole the baby. I plead that justice be temper with mercy on me, ” she pleaded. 

The culprit also told journalists that she carried out the act without the knowledge of her husband. 

Mr. Isaac Akinmoyede, the Police Commissioner in Plateau, attributed the timely arrest of the culprit to the painstaking and diligent investigations by his officers and men. 

He explained that Diyal perfected  her plans and leveraged on her deep knowledge of the terrain of the hospital where she once had her attachment, to steal the baby.

Akinmoyede said she faked her kidnapping story thinking it would give her strong alibi to have the baby, but that when she was confronted with obvious and naked realities, she confessed. 

“Currently, the Police is investigating her claim that she committed the crime alone. “The case will be charged to court immediately investigation is over,” the Police Commissioner said. 

Similarly, the Command paraded one Ismaila Oladipo, a staff of Moulds Nigeria Limited, who allegedly killed one Patience Musa at his residence, on May 31. 

The Command also said investigation into the alleged killing was ongoing and the suspect would be charged to court as soon as possible.
